Project Scope

Horwath HTL was engaged to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for a conversion and new construction project for TU Dresden. The project focused on developing a modern science and conference centre, complete with accommodations for university use, on the historically significant site of Grillenburg in the Tharandt Forest, Saxony. The study aimed to assess the viability of this unique development while preserving the site’s historical value and integrating contemporary academic and conference facilities.

The feasibility study began with an in-depth analysis of the project’s concept, including the integration of academic, accommodation, and conference functions. We evaluated the potential demand for such a centre, considering the needs of TU Dresden, the broader academic community, and the market for scientific and professional events. The study included benchmarking similar projects to identify best practices and ensure the proposed development aligned with current trends in university infrastructure and conference facilities.

A detailed assessment of the site’s historical and environmental significance was conducted to guide the design and construction process. This ensured that the project would respect the Grillenburg’s heritage while meeting modern requirements for functionality and sustainability.

The financial evaluation included cost projections for both the conversion and new construction elements, revenue potential from conferences and events, and operational feasibility. Sensitivity analyses were performed to address potential risks and challenges, including market fluctuations and the logistical considerations of a historically significant site.

Our final recommendations provided TU Dresden with a roadmap for successfully developing the science and conference centre, balancing its academic objectives, financial viability, and the preservation of the site’s historical character. This project demonstrated our ability to deliver tailored, multidisciplinary feasibility studies for complex and culturally significant developments.
