Spa Resort Destination Development Strategy

Our client sought support in formulating a development strategy at a time when South Africa was not extensively marketed as a spa destination, when compared to other destinations worldwide.

Project Scope

Horwath HTL was engaged by a client seeking to develop a spa resort destination in South Africa, at a time when the country was not widely recognised as a premier spa destination compared to global competitors. The objective was to support the creation of a sustainable development strategy for a Drakensberg Destination Spa Resort.

Our approach began with a comprehensive benchmark analysis of destination spa operations worldwide. We examined the key operational dynamics and success factors of established destination spas, providing our client with insights into best practices, operational models, and market trends. This analysis was then contextualised by the prevailing South African travel and tourism landscape, which included growth trends in wellness tourism and the increasing demand for high-quality leisure experiences.

By combining global benchmarks with local insights, we helped the client identify critical success factors for establishing a commercially sustainable spa resort. The strategy addressed market positioning, facility planning, service offerings, and pricing strategies to ensure long-term viability and competitiveness in both the South African and international spa tourism markets. This comprehensive approach provided the client with a clear, actionable roadmap for the development of their spa resort project in the Drakensberg region.
