Asia Pacific Hotel Sustainability Trends 2019

The "Asia Pacific Sustainability Trends 2019" report, developed by Greenview and Horwath HTL, provides a detailed overview of sustainability practices within the hotel industry across 13 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. With data from 2,453 hotels, this report offers insights into the region's progress in energy and water usage, cost management, and the adoption of sustainability practices.

Key Insights:

Energy and Water Usage Trends:

  • Several countries, including Australia, China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, reported reductions in energy usage per square meter in 2018 compared to 2017.
  • India, Maldives, and the Philippines have shown continuous reductions in energy usage since 2016.
  • Water usage trends were mixed, with some countries like India and China reducing water usage, while others, such as the Maldives and Thailand, saw increases in water consumption in 2018.

Cost Management:

  • Indonesia has consistently reduced energy costs per square meter since 2015, with an overall reduction of 28.2%.
  • Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand also reported reductions in energy costs in 2018 compared to the previous year.
  • In contrast, Singapore saw an increase in energy costs in 2018 despite previous reductions.

Adoption of Common Sustainability Practices:

  • Energy tracking remains the most common practice, with 99% of hotels in the region tracking their energy consumption.
  • Preventive maintenance programs are implemented by 97% of hotels, ensuring operational efficiency and reduced equipment failures.
  • Water tracking is also widespread, with 95% of hotels regularly monitoring water usage.

Emerging and Innovative Practices:

  • The report highlights emerging practices such as energy audits (49% uptake) and measuring carbon footprints (48% uptake).
  • However, more advanced practices like renewable energy generation and carbon offset purchases remain less common, with only 19% and 12% of hotels adopting these practices, respectively.

Regional Differences:

  • The Maldives and Myanmar are leading in the adoption of sustainability practices, with nearly 100% participation in several key areas.
  • Countries like Japan and the Philippines show lower adoption rates for practices such as water conservation and sustainability certification.

The report indicates that while there is significant progress in adopting sustainability practices, particularly in energy and water management, the Asia-Pacific region still has room for improvement, especially in the implementation of more innovative sustainability solutions.
