Ivens Arte Historical Urban Regeneration Project

Located in the heart of Chiado, one of Lisbon's most emblematic areas, this building, built in 1790, reflects the transition between traditional aristocratic residences and the homes of the emerging wealthy bourgeoisie of the 18th century.

With hybrid characteristics rare for the time, it combines the refinement of a noble residence, visible in the rich decoration of the first floor – which includes tiles attributed to Fábrica do Rato, mural paintings and carved ceilings – with a functional and performance aspect on the upper floors.

This project involved the revitalisation and enhancement of this unique architectural example, respecting its historical heritage and its context in Chiado.

Project Scope

Ivens Arte is an exceptional urban regeneration project situated in Lisbon’s Chiado district, a neighbourhood celebrated for its cultural and historical richness. Originally constructed in 1790, the building reflects an architectural style that blends noble residential characteristics with practical, income-generating spaces. This design captures the lifestyle of the 18th-century bourgeoisie, combining functionality with elegance.

The restoration of Ivens Arte was meticulously planned to preserve its historical essence while adapting it for contemporary use. Careful attention was given to maintaining original features such as intricate tile panels, mural paintings, and ornate ceilings. These elements were thoughtfully restored to highlight the building’s artistic and architectural heritage, while modern amenities were seamlessly integrated to provide a luxurious and comfortable living environment.

A key aspect of the project was its collaboration with renowned Portuguese artists, who added a modern creative dimension to the restored spaces. Sculptural art and handcrafted plaster ceilings were commissioned, blending contemporary artistry with the building’s historical context to create a truly unique and sophisticated atmosphere.

Now comprising six exclusive residential units ranging from one to three bedrooms, the project offers a harmonious combination of restored historical features and contemporary design elements. Each residence provides an exceptional living experience that honours the architectural legacy of Lisbon while catering to modern lifestyles.

Ivens Arte exemplifies the transformative power of urban regeneration, successfully revitalising a historic structure while maintaining its cultural significance. The project not only preserves the heritage of Chiado but also enhances its appeal by offering niche, high-quality real estate that seamlessly integrates history with modernity.
