São Tomé & Príncipe Islands Sustainable Tourism Strategy

Sustainability, as the central theme of the 21st century, was the structuring axis of the intervention project on Príncipe Island. The main objective was to equip the territory with effective tools and strategies for the sustainable management of its natural, cultural and economic resources.

The intervention also aimed to identify and promote projects that would directly contribute to improving the quality of life of local populations, with an integrated approach that connects Nature, Economy, Society and Culture.

This holistic approach positions Príncipe Island as an example of balanced and sustainable development.

Project Scope

The sustainable tourism project for São Tomé and Príncipe, with a particular focus on Príncipe Island, was designed as a transformative initiative to align tourism development with the principles of environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. Sustainability served as the foundational axis, reflecting its importance as a defining theme of the 21st century.

The intervention began with an in-depth analysis of Príncipe’s unique environmental and cultural assets. Known for its rich biodiversity, pristine landscapes, and vibrant local traditions, the island presented an unparalleled opportunity to develop a tourism model that prioritises preservation while generating economic benefits for the local community.

Key strategies included the implementation of eco-friendly tourism infrastructure, such as sustainable accommodations and renewable energy systems, to minimise the ecological footprint of visitors. Guidelines were established to ensure that all tourism activities aligned with conservation efforts, particularly in sensitive ecosystems like rainforests and marine habitats.

Community involvement was a central pillar of the project. Training programs and employment opportunities were developed to empower local residents, enabling them to play an active role in the tourism sector. Initiatives such as cultural tours, craft markets, and culinary experiences were introduced to showcase the island’s heritage while directly benefiting its communities.

Marketing efforts highlighted Príncipe as a unique and sustainable destination, targeting eco-conscious travellers and niche tourism markets. The project also encouraged partnerships with international organisations and investors who shared a commitment to sustainability.

This sustainable tourism initiative positioned Príncipe Island as a model for balancing development with preservation. By integrating ecological and cultural priorities into its framework, the project created a roadmap for long-term economic growth that safeguards the island’s extraordinary natural and cultural resources for future generations.
