Module 001 · Start here
How AI works, how to brief it, and where it fits in your role
Duration
4 hours
Format
Half day, on-site
Audience
Everyone in the room together
About the module
Most people have already tried AI and had it produce something plausible and useless. This session starts there, with a hotel question answered confidently and wrongly, and works back into what the tool is actually doing and when it is about to go wrong. It then teaches the skill everything else depends on: a brief that gets a usable answer on the first or second attempt. Short demonstrations show where AI fits across research, numbers and writing, and everyone leaves knowing which parts of their own work to try it on next. Where the organisation has its own AI policy, the ground rules are its rules.
Who it is for
Everyone in the room together, from a whole department to the first group of new licence holders. Mixed pairs work better than grouping people by level or by how much they have used AI already.
Learning objective
Build a working picture of how AI produces an answer, write briefs that get usable output on everyday work, and leave knowing where AI fits in your own role. Works on whichever AI tools the room already has.
Bring this module to your team
Tell us who would be in the room and what they work on. We will suggest how to run it, on its own or with other modules.
What you will do
Explain how AI produces an answer, without maths and without jargon
Say why it invents things, and predict the situations where it will
Name what the landscape contains beyond the chatbot most people have tried
Write any request as a complete brief: Task, Context, Boundaries, Deliverable
Repair output that missed in rounds, rather than starting again or giving up
Know what never goes into AI, and what must be checked before it leaves the building
Leave knowing which parts of your own work to try AI on next, with the requests that worked saved to reuse

Section 001-1 · 65 min
How AI Works, and What Is Out There
Demonstrations opened to questions from the floor: what a model is doing when it answers, why it invents things, what the landscape contains beyond the chatbot everyone has tried, and where the property is already using AI without calling it that.
You leave with: An explanation of how AI answers that you can give your own team.
Section 001-2 · 30 min
Ground Rules
What never goes into AI, what must be checked before it is used, and where AI help is disclosed. Where the organisation has its own AI policy, it is worked through as real cases.
You leave with: A practical grasp of the rules you can apply on any tool.
Section 001-3 · 85 min
The Brief That Works
A weak request from a real hotel inbox fails on screen, then gets rebuilt. Four stages, each taught, demonstrated, then run in pairs on tasks from participants’ own week: Brief, Run, Repair and Bank, with the brief in four parts, Task, Context, Boundaries and Deliverable.
You leave with: Two briefs that produced usable output on your own work, and the repair loop that got them there.
Section 001-4 · 40 min
Where It Fits in Your Role
Short demonstrations with brief hands-on, chosen to match the roles in the room: researching a question with sources you can check, answering a question from a spreadsheet, drafting in the house voice, and turning a monthly task into a saved instruction that runs again next month.
You leave with: A first-hand sense of where AI fits in your role, and which deeper workshop comes next.
Section 001-5 · 20 min
Your First Week
Each participant chooses a few pieces of real work coming up in the next week to try AI on, and saves the requests that worked today, so they reuse them rather than start from a blank page.
You leave with: A short list of real work to try next, and requests worth reusing.
What you leave with
A working picture of how it answers
Enough to explain to your own team why AI gets things wrong, and to see the situations where it is about to.
The briefing method
The four-part brief and the repair loop, practised in pairs on tasks from your own week.
Ground rules you can apply
What may go in, what may not, and what gets checked before anything reaches a guest, member or owner. Where the organisation has its own AI policy, these are its rules.
A plan for the week ahead
The pieces of your own work to try AI on first, the requests that worked today saved to reuse, and a clear idea of which deeper workshop would serve you best next.
How we tailor it
Runs on whichever tools the room has. For hands-on setup on a licensed tool, use Claude Essentials, or an equivalent built for another tool on request.
The ground rules are the organisation’s own AI policy, worked through as real cases.
Briefs are written on tasks from participants’ own week, agreed with each department beforehand.
