Lousã Accessible Tourism Destination
The aim of the project was to make the municipality of Lousã an accessible tourism destination, promoting the inclusion of all visitors, regardless of their physical condition.
The initiative involved adapting public infrastructures and training professionals in the tourism sector, with a focus on creating a positive and accessible experience.
Lousã has positioned itself as an example of good practice in inclusive tourism, being recognised with awards and honourable mentions, which has also inspired other municipalities to adopt similar measures.
Project Scope
The Lousã Accessible Tourism Destination project aimed to transform the municipality of Lousã into a benchmark for inclusive tourism, ensuring accessibility for all visitors, regardless of physical condition. This initiative sought to enhance the region’s appeal by removing barriers and promoting universal access to its natural, cultural, and recreational offerings.
The project began with a comprehensive assessment of the municipality’s current infrastructure, identifying areas where improvements were necessary to meet accessibility standards. This included public spaces, tourist attractions, accommodation facilities, and transportation networks. A key focus was ensuring that all visitors could navigate and experience the destination with ease and dignity.
Strategic interventions were implemented to address these challenges. Public pathways and access points were redesigned to accommodate individuals with reduced mobility, while key attractions were equipped with appropriate facilities, such as ramps, tactile guides, and accessible restrooms. Training programs were introduced for local businesses and tourism operators to ensure staff could provide inclusive and sensitive service to visitors with diverse needs.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the project included the development of promotional materials and itineraries highlighting accessible attractions and services. Digital tools and guides were designed to assist visitors in planning their trips, ensuring seamless and enjoyable experiences.
By prioritising inclusion, the Lousã Accessible Tourism Destination project not only expanded the municipality’s appeal to a wider audience but also reinforced its commitment to social responsibility and equality. The initiative established Lousã as a pioneering destination for accessible tourism, setting an example for other regions and promoting the values of inclusivity and universal access within the tourism sector.
