About

Prof. Dr. Christian Buer (born 1967 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen) attended the University of St. Gallen (HSG), Switzerland, after graduating from the Institut Monatana in Zug in 1987. There he successfully completed his studies in business administration (with a major/focus ontourism and transport economics) in 1992 (lic. oec. HSG) and started his first job as project manager at Steigenberger Consulting GmbH. With this activity he established the area of new media and IT besides extensive project studies and developments and gained international project experience in the hotel & tourism industry (e.g. Steigenberger Hotels, Steigenberger Reservation Service, Deutsche Telekom, Lufthansa Systems).

Between 1995 and1997 Prof. Dr. Buer completed his dissertation at Prof. Dr. Claude Kaspar at the University of St. Gallen on the topic "Design of holistic management systems in hotels - The importance of information requirements, acquisition and processing for a management system in a holistic hotel operation" (Dr. oec. HSG).

In June 1998, he joined the joint venture of Arabella Sheraton as Group Director Marketing Services & Development and was responsible for hotel development and acquisition as well as for the group-wide marketing of the individual hotel operations.

At the turn of the millennium, Prof. Dr. Buer took up his position at FUNDUS Hotel Development and Management Company mbH in2000. In this function he took over responsibility for all hotel activities of the FUNDUS Group, represented and supervised its projects and hotel operations, which include renowned establishments such as the Hotel Adlon in Berlin, the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm, the Renaissance in Atlanta and the Quellenhof in Aachen.

Since 2004, he has been a full professor of business administration at Heilbronn University and teaches the most important issues concerning tourism companies, especially hotels. As dean, he headed the entire service-oriented Faculty of Business 2 (now the Faculty of International Business) from December 2006 to October 2009. Today, he is the Head of Department for Tourism Business, which includes three-degree programs (Bachelor Tourism Management, Bachelor Hotel and Restaurant Management, Master International Tourism Management) and Pro-Dean of the Faculty of International Business.
As an independent management consultant in his own consulting company Nemis, he advises developers, financiers and real estate experts for tourism properties.

In 2006, he founded the European Institute for Hotel Management Heilbronn with the aim to conduct scientific research in the tourism, accommodation and catering industry.

Christian is a member of the "Travel Industry Club - TIC" and advisory board for science. Furthermore, he is a member of the HDV - Hotel Directors Association in Germany and is in the strategy advisory board "Education & Development” as well as Chairman of the Heilbronn Hospitality Symposium.

On 1 July 2021, he will take over the management of Horwath HTL Germany, the world's leading hotel, tourism and leisure consultancy.
