Anuradhapura Sacred City
Office: Horwath HTL France
Location: Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka
Category: Tourism and Leisure Business Line, Tourism development strategy
Project Overview: Anuradhapura is one of the historical capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of ancient Sri Lankan civilization. The city, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the center of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries and is still today a major pilgrimage site. The French Development Agency, in line with a new perspective of heritage conservation and its integration in an urban project, required Horwath HTL’s assistance as part of a team of consultants led by A’Urba (Urban planning agency of the city of Bordeaux) to support the cultural and tourism development of Anuradhapura.
Scope of Work: The French Development Agency entrusted Horwath HTL France with the strategy for tourism and cultural development of Anuradhapura UNESCO World Heritage site in Sri Lanka, in partnership with a French urban planning Agency.
Horwath HTL Solution and Implementation: Horwath HTL conducted a market analysis focusing on international and domestic tourists, an international benchmark regarding the management of archaeological sites, fieldwork and workshop facilitation with local and national stakeholders. This led to the proposal of a unique electric bike based tour system, the pre-feasibility study for the creation of a visitor and Interpretation center, and a detailed action plan aiming at increasing Anuradhapura tourist attendance and maximizing local economic spill overs.
Project Status: The tourism study was presented to Sri Lankan Authorities and delivered to the A’Urba team in charge of leading the mission. The results of the study will contribute to the further work developed by the urban planning and landscaping team of international consultants.
