The previous edition of the South African market report provided an overview of the South African tourism environment for the year ended December2010. In this edition of the South African market report, we provide an update of the tourism environment over the past two years.
The Tourism Environment, Tourism Policy
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, South Africa’s Travel and Tourism industry is a significant export earner exceeding the country’s exports of automotive manufacturing, chemicals manufacturing, agriculture, financial services,
education and construction. In 2011, visitor exports totalled approximately ZAR74.4 billion [US$10.3 billion], representing approximately 68 percent of all service exports and approximately 9 percent of all exports. Travel and Tourism generated, either directly or indirectly, approximately ZAR252.7 billion [US$35 billion] of South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product in 2011 with its direct impact being twice as large as the impact on Gross Domestic Product of the automotive manufacturing industry.
